Nelson Monument

The Nelson Monument is a sandstone tower on Calton Hill with Doric columns and a lantern room at its top. The structure stands prominently on the hillside and provides viewing opportunities across the city and landscape below.

Construction of the monument began in 1807 to honor Admiral Horatio Nelson following his death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The project reflected Edinburgh's effort to commemorate significant historical figures of the era.

The monument displays signal flags on Trafalgar Day featuring Nelson's command to his crew during a pivotal naval engagement. These flags remain a tangible connection to the moment that shaped British naval tradition.

Visitors can climb 143 steps to reach the observation platform and explore the interior. On clear days, the ascent rewards you with views of the city and surrounding hills.

A mechanical time ball descends from the tower as the One O'Clock Gun fires from Edinburgh Castle. This system historically helped ships set their chronometers with precision.
