Stewart's Melville College, formerly Edinburgh Institution for Languages and Mathematics
Stewart's Melville College is a boys' school for ages 11 to 18 on Queensferry Road in the west of Edinburgh. The building has a classical stone facade with large windows and sits within a quiet residential area of the city.
The school was formed in the 19th century from two earlier institutions, Daniel Stewart's College and Melville College, both rooted in charitable foundations set up to educate orphaned children. Those origins shaped a social ethic that the school has carried forward ever since.
The school's name brings together two founding figures, and that dual identity is still felt in daily school life. Students wear a uniform and take part together in concerts, theatre productions, and sporting events throughout the year.
The school sits on Queensferry Road, a main road in the west of Edinburgh that is served by several bus routes. Anyone wishing to visit or find out about programmes should contact the school in advance, as access to the grounds is not open to the general public.
From August 2026, the school will merge with The Mary Erskine School to become Erskine Stewart Melville, a fully co-educational institution from nursery through to sixth form. This brings to a close a chapter of single-sex schooling stretching back more than 150 years.
