Ynys-hir RSPB reserve, Nature reserve near Dyfi estuary in Ceredigion, Wales
Ynys-hir RSPB reserve is a nature reserve in Ceredigion covering around 550 hectares, featuring a mix of coastal mudflats, salt marshes, oak woodlands, and hillside terrain along the Welsh coast. Seven observation hides and multiple walking paths enable visitors to watch various bird species such as lapwings, redshanks, and little egrets year-round.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds established this reserve in 1970 after acquiring the land from a private landowner. This acquisition marked the beginning of its development as a major wildlife refuge.
The name Ynys-hir comes from Welsh language meaning 'long island', referring to a wooded ridge that was previously surrounded by marsh areas. This naming reflects how the local landscape has shaped the identity of the place over generations.
The site features well-maintained paths and observation hides designed for comfortable bird watching throughout your visit. The best time to visit is during migration and winter periods when bird activity is at its peak.
The reserve served as filming location for BBC's Springwatch from 2011 to 2013, bringing its natural life to national television audiences. This television exposure introduced the site to viewers far beyond Wales.
