Taff's Well Thermal Spring, Thermal spring in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales.
Taff's Well Thermal Spring is a natural hot spring on the eastern bank of the River Taff in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. The water flows out at a steady temperature of around 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit) year-round, making it the only known thermal spring in Wales.
The spring was used as far back as the medieval period, when its waters were considered to have healing properties. By the Victorian era it had become a popular destination, drawing people from across the region who sought relief from various ailments.
The spring gave the village its name: the word "Well" in Taff's Well comes directly from this water source. Visitors can still approach the spring today, as it sits within an open park area along the riverbank.
The spring is accessible through Taff's Well Park, which opens during the summer months and allows visitors to get close to the water. An audio guide is available on site and offers useful context about what you are looking at.
The water that reaches the surface here has traveled underground for between 5,000 and 10,000 years, moving through rock at just 5 meters (16 feet) per year. That means the water you see today began its journey long before recorded history in Britain.
