Mossman Collection, Horse-drawn carriage museum at Stockwood Discovery Centre, England
The Mossman Collection is a carriage museum at Stockwood Discovery Centre in Luton displaying over 60 historical vehicles including landaus and barouches from Britain spanning the 1700s to 1900s. The exhibits document the evolution of private passenger transport with different models designed for various purposes.
George Mossman built the collection while operating a transportation business, and donated the vehicles to Luton Museum Service in 1991. The holdings have expanded since through additional acquisitions from other collectors.
The collection shows vehicles from different social classes, ranging from everyday delivery carts to elaborate coaches that served British nobility.
The museum is located at Stockwood Discovery Centre on London Road and opens on weekdays with varying hours depending on the season. Visitors should check opening times in advance and allow adequate time to view the diverse collection of vehicles.
The collection includes a chariot used in the film Ben Hur and numerous vehicles built for productions at Pinewood and Elstree studios. These film connections reveal how valuable these historical vehicles became to the British film industry.
