Adelaide Mansions, Grade II listed terrace houses in Hove, England
Adelaide Mansions is a four-story terrace of connected houses in Hove with classical architectural details, including Doric-columned porches and decorative iron railings. The rows of windows and balconies overlook the seafront promenade, creating a unified Victorian-era facade.
The building was designed in 1873 by Thomas Lainson as part of a housing development by Isaac Lyon Goldsmid intended to rival the neighboring Kemp Town area. It arose during the rapid expansion of Hove as a wealthy seaside residential destination.
The building represents the transformation of agricultural Wick estate into high-class housing during the Victorian expansion of seaside resorts in England.
The building sits at 1-4 Kingsway in Hove, at the corner with St John's Road, steps away from the seafront promenade. It is easily accessible on foot from Hove's center and located in a well-maintained residential neighborhood.
Two sections of the building were converted into a hotel in 1918 and operated as a guest accommodation until the 1970s. This adaptation shows how the property shifted to meet changing economic needs of the period.
