Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse, Category C listed lighthouse in Kilninian and Kilmore, Scotland
Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse is a white stone tower with a black lantern room positioned on the northern coast of the Isle of Mull. The structure rises approximately 19 meters and commands views across the Sound of Mull toward the surrounding waters and islands.
This maritime beacon was built in 1857 by the Scottish engineering brothers Thomas and David Stevenson. It formed part of their wider effort to improve safe passage through Scotland's treacherous northern waters.
The name Rubha nan Gall translates from Scottish Gaelic to Stranger's Point, reflecting the local language heritage of the Isle of Mull.
The lighthouse is reachable by a short walk from the road, and sturdy footwear is advisable due to uneven terrain. Multiple viewpoints around the site offer good photo opportunities, and the exposed coastal location means it is often windy.
The former keeper's cottages operate independently using spring water and solar power systems, completely disconnected from mainland utilities. This self-sufficient approach blends traditional isolation with contemporary renewable energy solutions.
