Mingary Castle, Medieval castle in Ardnamurchan, Scotland.
Mingary Castle is a hexagonal fortress standing on a rocky ridge by the sea, with thick stone walls about 9 feet (2.7 meters) thick and defensive structures facing the water. The building underwent extensive restoration starting in 2013 and shows the typical design of medieval Scottish fortifications.
The castle was built in the 13th century and later served King James IV of Scotland as a stronghold during his conflicts with Clan Donald in the 1490s. In 1588 it became the target of a siege involving a Spanish Armada ship caught up in local clan fighting.
The fortress was the center of power struggles between Scottish clans like the MacIains, MacDonalds, and Campbells whose influence shifted over the centuries. These rivalries shaped the local history and still matter to people who live in the Highlands today.
Access is easiest by land since the rocky location requires approaching from the mainland side. It is wise to wear sturdy footwear and watch the tides and weather, as these can affect your visit to the site.
The Spanish Armada ship San Juan de Sicilia took part in an unusual local conflict in 1588 and besieged the fortress for three days. This episode links the castle to the larger story of the Spanish fleet and shows how global events touched local clan fighting.
