Hermitage of Braid, Category A listed building in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
Hermitage of Braid is a protected stone building located on a large nature reserve between two hills in southern Edinburgh. The grounds are crossed by the Braid Burn stream and feature walking paths, woodland areas, and viewpoints over the city and surrounding landscape.
The building was constructed in 1785 and replaced a medieval castle that previously occupied the site. It was later donated to Edinburgh's city council and transformed into a public park available to the community.
The Hermitage maintains its original castellated architectural style from the 18th century, reflecting the influences of prominent architect Robert Adam's designs.
The building serves visitors as an information center for the nature reserve and is surrounded by several walking trails. Access is open so visitors can explore the paths and climb the hills at any time of day.
The estate was originally in private hands before being generously donated to become public property. This gift made it one of the first major green spaces to become accessible on the southern side of the city.
