Caprington Castle, 15th century castle in East Ayrshire, Scotland
Caprington Castle is a 15th-century castle that combines a medieval keep with a four-story central tower and square corner turrets. The grounds feature a terrace with round corner bastions and a covered entrance area that provides access to different sections.
The Wallace family owned Caprington from 1385 until the property passed to the Cunningham family in 1400 through marriage. A major renovation around 1829 transformed the building from a fortress into a residential mansion.
The rooms show how Scottish noble families reshaped their homes over time. Gothic decorations and carefully crafted plaster ceilings in the hall and staircase tell of growing wealth.
Access to the castle comes through the covered entrance area, from which visitors can reach the different parts of the grounds. The terrace with its bastions also offers views across the property and surrounding landscape.
Original architectural drawings from before the 1829 modernization survive and show how the conversion from fortress to residential mansion took place. These documents offer rare insight into how Scottish castles were adapted and changed.
