St Austin's Church, Grassendale

St Austin's Church in Grassendale is a Gothic Revival Catholic church constructed in brick with a distinctive sandstone facade, two tall turrets, and pointed lancet windows. A central rose window featuring decorative iron tracery serves as the focal point of the front elevation.

The church opened in 1838 under the care of Benedictine monks from Ampleforth Abbey, who managed it until 2012. After that transition, its use as an active place of worship came to an end.

The interior reveals a west gallery held up by iron columns and a chancel displaying a large Crucifixion painting. This arrangement shaped how worshippers experienced the space during the building's active years.

The building sits on Aigburth Road in a residential neighborhood and is straightforward to locate. Since regular services ended in 2015, visitors should check opening times or access conditions before making a trip.

The church grounds include a three-story presbytery and a former school building dating to around 1860. Both ancillary structures share Grade II listed status, adding to the historical character of the entire complex.
