Church of SS Mary and Ambrose, Edgbaston

Church of SS Mary and Ambrose, Edgbaston, grade II listed church in the United kingdom

The Church of SS Mary and Ambrose in Edgbaston is a stone church building with traditional design that has remained largely unchanged since completion in 1898. Inside, the open nave features wooden pews, simple furnishings, and tall ceilings flooded with light from the windows, while a notable organ by J. W. Walker & Sons provides the focal point for musical worship.

The church was built in 1897 and formally opened in late September 1898 by the Bishop of Worcester, following local fundraising efforts and a land gift from Augustus Gough-Calthorpe. Architect J. A. Chatwin designed the building in traditional style, and the organ installed at its opening reflects the community's commitment to music within worship.

The church is dedicated to two saints, Mary and Ambrose, whose names reflect the spiritual foundation of this place. Visitors can see how the community gathers here for weekly services, seasonal celebrations with modest decorations, and quiet reflection throughout the year.

The interior is easy to navigate with an open layout that allows visitors to move freely past the wooden pews and toward the altar. The building welcomes visitors regularly and serves as part of the Diocese of Birmingham, making quiet weekdays the best times to visit when it is less busy.

The organ was installed by the well-known firm J. W. Walker & Sons in the year it opened and has remained in use ever since, attracting various talented organists who played here before moving on to other positions. This musical significance shaped the building as a venue for concerts and events beyond regular services.
