St Mary's Church, Lowdham, Medieval parish church in Lowdham, England.
St Mary's Church is a stone parish church in Lowdham featuring decorated tracery windows, a prominent central tower, and carefully crafted architectural details in medieval style. The building displays typical features of a medieval parish church with elaborate stonework throughout.
The church was founded around 1250 and received its current appearance through major restoration work between 1859 and 1861 under architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. This restoration shaped the building we see today.
The church holds a recumbent effigy of Sir John de Lowdham from 1318, showing how medieval people commemorated their dead through carved stone figures. Such memorials were a common way to honor important local figures.
The church is normally open to visitors during service times and is jointly managed with two other local churches in the area. It is worth checking exact visiting times beforehand since opening hours may change depending on services and events.
The church contains a pipe organ built by Charles Lloyd that was rebuilt in 1963 by Cousins of Lincoln and still plays today. This organ represents a rare example of historical restoration that preserved the instrument's original character.
