St John's Church, Egremont, Neoclassical church building in Egremont, United Kingdom
St John's Church is a Neoclassical church building in Egremont located on Liscard Road with characteristic classical design features. The facade is defined by a Doric portico with four fluted columns supporting an entablature, while decorative pediment windows punctuate the exterior walls.
The church was designed and opened for worship in 1833 by architect Henry Turberville Edwards. Major restoration work followed in 1881 under the direction of Cornelius Sherlock.
A war memorial in the churchyard honors parishioners lost during World War I. The monument stands as a place where the community gathers to remember those who served.
The building is easily accessible from Liscard Road for visitors to locate. Check ahead before visiting, as the church is undergoing transition toward private stewardship.
The church ceiling spans approximately 19 meters without interior supports, a remarkable feat of construction for a 19th-century building. This unsupported span represents one of the largest examples of its kind in the region.
