Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Wallasey, Gothic Revival Catholic church in Seacombe, England
The Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea is a Gothic Revival church in Seacombe with stone walls and a slate roof. The interior features a five-bay nave with a large rose window that brings light into the space.
Edmund Kirby designed this church, which opened in July 1889 to serve the growing Catholic community near the Birkenhead docks. It became an important gathering place in an area where dock workers and their families made their homes.
Inside, you find marble altars and life-size statues of Mary and Saint Joseph that command attention in the nave. Stained glass windows throughout tell stories from Jesus's life and give the space a spiritual quality that invites contemplation.
The church sits on Wheatland Lane and has parking available nearby for visitors. It is best to check service times before visiting, as the building is primarily used for worship.
A two-manual pipe organ inside provides music during Sunday services, creating a particular sound character for the space. The east window contains stained glass that honors those who died in the First World War, with their memory embedded in the colored panes.
