St Tudwal’s Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse on St Tudwal's Island West, Wales
St Tudwal's Lighthouse is a stone tower on a small island off the Welsh coast, standing about 11 meters tall with a lantern at the top. The building was constructed to help ships navigate safely in Cardigan Bay.
Trinity House purchased the island in 1876 and built the lighthouse the following year to guide ships through dangerous waters. The building was later automated to operate with minimal staff.
This lighthouse stands on an isolated island that has long been part of the Welsh coastal landscape observed by fishermen and sailors. The structure connects the island to the mainland through its role as a navigational marker in daily maritime life.
The light can be seen from the nearby shore on clear nights, and the island is visible from several coastal viewpoints. Access to the island is limited, so check local conditions before planning a visit.
The tower was powered by solar energy starting in the 1920s and was among the earliest automated lighthouses of its kind. This shift to renewable energy happened decades before modern environmental movements began.
