Milecastle 45, Roman milecastle on Walltown Crags, England
Milecastle 45 is a Roman fortified outpost positioned on Walltown Crags as part of a major defensive line across northern Britain. The ruins reveal the layout of buildings and stone foundations that once stood in this exposed elevated location.
The fort was built in the early 2nd century as part of a major Roman defensive strategy to secure northern Britain's borders. It underwent different phases of maintenance and changing use throughout the period of Roman occupation.
The structure contained two barrack blocks housing Roman auxiliary soldiers who maintained surveillance and collected customs duties from travelers.
The site is reachable by a walking path from a nearby car park and involves an uphill hike over sometimes steep ground. The route is best accessed on foot, particularly in dry weather, as the paths across the ridge can become slippery.
Excavations found evidence of metalworking activities that show people here did more than stand watch - they also engaged in crafts and repairs. These findings reveal that life at this remote posting involved practical work beyond purely military duties.
