Cambridge Mosque, Islamic center in Mill Road district, Cambridge, United Kingdom
Cambridge Mosque is an Islamic center in the Mill Road district in Cambridge, England, with a main prayer hall that can hold up to 1000 people. The architecture features wooden columns that form geometric patterns and define the modern building.
The Muslim Academic Trust acquired the site in 2009, and construction started in 2016. Completion took place in 2019 with an official opening ceremony for the community.
The name comes from the Arabic word for a place of prayer, and the wooden columns inside create a sense of calm for all visitors. Local residents use the space for language classes and shared meals during Ramadan.
The building has areas for ritual washing, teaching rooms, facilities for children, a morgue, a cafe, and meeting rooms for the community. All spaces are at ground level or accessible via ramps, and the site is open to visitors during the day.
Solar panels on the roof power the prayer hall, while a rainwater harvesting system supplies the toilets and irrigation for the gardens. Natural ventilation throughout the building reduces the need for artificial air conditioning all year round.
