Cambridge railway station, Railway station in Cambridge, England
Cambridge railway station is a terminal building with a classical facade located along Station Road in Cambridge, England. The complex holds eight platforms and sits in the southeastern corner of town between residential streets and commercial areas.
The Northern and Eastern Railway opened this terminal in 1845 after surveys that had started two decades earlier. The building was later expanded to handle growing traffic between Cambridge and other English towns.
The building sees students and staff arriving from distant towns each morning and leaving again at dusk. Trains heading to London fill with commuters and travelers carrying bags of books and laptops.
The entrance opens early in the morning and closes late in the evening on weekdays, with slightly shorter hours on Sundays. Ticket machines and information boards are located in the main hall, and platforms can be reached by stairs or lifts.
One of the platforms stretches over an unusually long distance and ranks among the most extended in the entire country. The bicycle parking area can hold more than two thousand bikes and is one of the largest of its kind in Britain.
