Cambridge War Memorial, War memorial and Grade II listed building in Cambridge, England
Cambridge War Memorial is a bronze statue in Cambridge, England, now standing outside the Cambridge University Botanic Garden entrance. The figure depicts a soldier from the Cambridgeshire Regiment walking with a rifle across his shoulder while looking back toward the railway station.
The memorial was unveiled by the Duke of York in July 1922 and honors men from Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely who served in World War I. The statue was relocated to its current location in 2012 from its original position on Station Road.
The statue was created by sculptor R. Tait McKenzie and shows a soldier carrying roses. This symbolizes the bond between those who came home and those who did not.
The memorial sits on Hills Road directly outside the entrance to Cambridge University Botanic Garden, making it easy to find and visit. The location provides a calm setting for viewing this Grade II listed structure.
The statue's head was modeled after Kenneth Hamilton, a student from Christ's College in Cambridge during that era. Originally, the head was made of gilded plaster before the final bronze version was installed.
