Inchdrewer Castle

Inchdrewer Castle is a tower house located near Banff in Aberdeenshire with thick stone walls and multiple stories stacked vertically. The structure stands on elevated ground and displays the sturdy construction typical of medieval Scottish fortifications.

The tower house emerged during the early modern period and came into the hands of the Ogilvie family, who used it as their residence. The property passed to the Abercromby family in the early 1800s and eventually fell into abandonment.

The rooms contain fireplaces and window seats that reflect the comfort sought by the wealthy families who lived here. These details reveal how the residents managed both defense and domestic life within the same structure.

The building remains uninhabited and is undergoing restoration work, with only external repairs completed so far. Visitors should expect limited access and be aware that the interior may not be fully open to exploration.

In 1713 a prominent figure was murdered within these walls, with those responsible attempting to cover their tracks by setting the castle alight. This violent event remains one of the darkest chapters in the structure's past.
