Gairloch Heritage Museum

The Gairloch Heritage Museum is an independent museum in this coastal town that displays maritime artifacts, geological specimens, and archaeological discoveries from across the Highlands. It is housed in a converted military bunker that serves as a modern exhibition space.

The museum was established in 1977 by the Ross and Cromarty Heritage Society and relocated to its current location in a former military bunker in 2019. This move allowed the institution to expand and present its collection in a newly renovated space.

The exhibition features the original Fresnel lens from Rua Reidh Lighthouse and displays a reconstructed traditional Scottish croft dwelling. These items offer insight into how people lived and worked in this Highland region over time.

The museum provides wheelchair access throughout the building, a café with dietary options, and a gift shop featuring local crafts and products. Plan to spend a few hours to browse the displays and soak in the local heritage.

The museum received the Art Fund Museum of the Year Award in 2020 for its innovative responses during a global health crisis. This recognition highlighted the team's creative approaches to adapting when circumstances demanded flexibility.
