Bishop Edward King Chapel, Theological chapel in Cuddesdon, United Kingdom
Bishop Edward King Chapel is a stone chapel with an elliptical shape designed to serve theological students in Cuddesdon. The interior is defined by slender timber columns resembling trees that support a light-filled roof lit by high windows running along its upper walls.
The building was designed in 2009 by Niall McLaughlin Architects to replace a smaller nineteenth-century chapel at Ripon Theological College. It was built to provide the growing community with contemporary spaces suited to modern worship practices.
The chapel is named after Bishop Edward King and holds spiritual importance for the theological community studying here. Visitors can see how students and resident sisters use the space daily for prayer and worship.
The chapel is located on the grounds of Ripon Theological College and serves primarily as a place for prayer and worship for students and residents. Keep in mind this is an active place of worship where quiet and respect for services should be maintained.
The timber columns inside create a forest-like arrangement forming a circular path around the central prayer space. This unusual layout creates an intimate path for reflection that differs markedly from traditional chapel designs.
