Broad Walk, Historic walkway in Christ Church Meadow, Oxford, England
Broad Walk is a flat footpath that runs from St Aldate's through Christ Church War Memorial Garden to the River Cherwell at the University of Oxford Botanic Garden. The route connects key university buildings and green spaces while providing a direct passage through central Oxford.
The path evolved as part of the landscaping development around Christ Church College over the centuries. A significant moment came in 1783 when James Sadler launched the first recorded hot air balloon flight in Britain from the adjacent Merton Field.
The walkway frames views of important buildings like Tom Tower and Christ Church Cathedral spire, which shape the character of the space. These sightlines create some of the distinctive views that visitors experience while moving through the heart of the university.
The level ground makes walking easy and accessible for most visitors. The best experience comes on dry days, as wet conditions can make the surface slippery.
The pathway was once lined with large elm trees that were later removed due to Dutch elm disease spreading through the area. Those trees shaped the character of the place for many generations before they disappeared.
