Cartland Bridge, Stone bridge in South Lanarkshire, Scotland
Cartland Bridge spans Mouse Water with three stone arches rising approximately 39 meters above the water surface. The structure features carefully dressed stone throughout its construction and shows the solid masonry work typical of early 19th-century design.
Thomas Telford designed the bridge in 1821, with construction completed in 1822. The project improved transportation connections across the region and represented the engineering advances of the period.
The bridge serves as a connection point for local walking routes and brings together the historic town of Lanark with the surrounding countryside. People use it to explore the landscape and enjoy views across the valley below.
The bridge can be reached via the A73 road northwest of Lanark, with parking available nearby. It is a good spot for photography and serves as a starting point for walks into the surrounding area.
When built, this was one of the highest bridges spanning inland water in Scotland. The height was a remarkable technical achievement using the construction methods available at that time.
