St Michael and All Angels Church, Badminton, Grade I listed church in Badminton, England.
St Michael and All Angels Church is a Grade I listed church in Badminton, England, featuring a tunnel-vaulted nave with ornamental plasterwork, classical arcades, and four small saucer domes inside. The exterior presents a Georgian stone facade, while the interior is finished with refined decorative detail throughout.
The church was built in 1785 by architect Charles Evans to replace an earlier medieval structure on the same site. Its design followed the model of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, placing it within the Georgian church-building tradition of the late 18th century.
The church contains sculptures by Grinling Gibbons and John Michael Rysbrack, including a figure of the first Duke of Beaufort dressed in ceremonial robes. These works reflect the building's role as a private chapel for the Beaufort family, who have owned the surrounding estate for centuries.
The church is generally open during services coordinated through the Badminton Benefice, as well as during Badminton House tour events. Contacting ahead of a visit is recommended, as opening times can vary depending on the season and any scheduled events.
The church served as the burial place of the Somerset family for generations, with members of the family interred in a vault beneath the building until 1910. This makes it one of the few estate churches in England that functioned as both a parish church and a private dynastic monument at the same time.
