Sophia Gardens Pavilion, Performance venue in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, United Kingdom
Sophia Gardens Pavilion was a performance and sports venue located in the southern section of Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. The hall accommodated roughly 2500 spectators and hosted a wide range of events throughout its operational years.
The pavilion was built in 1951 from an aircraft hangar from RAF Stormy Down near Bridgend, repurposed during post-war material shortages. In January 1982 the roof collapsed under heavy snow, and demolition followed shortly after.
The venue hosted numerous concerts featuring performers such as Danny Kaye, Cliff Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Slade throughout its existence.
The venue served as the main location for boxing and wrestling competitions during the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. The site was positioned in the southern area of the gardens where parking now occupies the space.
The roof collapsed under about 1.2 meters (4 feet) of snow in 1982, a devastating failure that came just after funds for major repairs had been approved. This dramatic structural failure ended the venue's existence shortly after.
