Cardiff Roman Fort, Roman military fort in Cardiff, Wales
The fortification stands within Cardiff Castle grounds, featuring stone walls reaching 17 feet high and covering approximately 9 acres of land.
Built around 55 AD during the Roman campaign against the Silures tribe, the fort underwent three major reconstructions before its final stone version in 290 AD.
The fort structure appears in Welsh medieval literature within the tale of Geraint and Enid, connecting Roman history to Welsh storytelling traditions.
Visitors can examine sections of original Roman walls integrated into Cardiff Castle's structure, along with a Victorian reconstruction of a Roman gateway.
The fort contained specialized ironworking facilities during the late 2nd century, indicating its transformation from military installation to industrial center.
