Penguin Pool, Zoo architecture in City of Westminster, United Kingdom
The Penguin Pool features two interlocking spiral ramps suspended over an elliptical pool, with glass-fronted diving areas for observation purposes.
Berthold Lubetkin and the Tecton Group completed this modernist structure in 1934, incorporating innovative reinforced concrete construction techniques with engineering support from Ove Arup.
The structure received Grade I listed building status in 1970, marking its importance in British architectural heritage and early modernist movement influence.
The pool remained empty since 2004 when penguins were relocated due to health concerns related to walking on concrete surfaces in the enclosure.
The building appeared in Harry Styles' music video 'As It Was', demonstrating its continued cultural presence despite no longer housing its intended inhabitants.
