Penguin Pool, Zoo architecture in City of Westminster, United Kingdom
The Penguin Pool is a concrete structure featuring two interlocking spiral ramps suspended above an elliptical basin, creating a visually striking modernist form. Visitors could observe animals from multiple levels, with glazed viewing sections positioned to provide unobstructed sightlines into the enclosure.
The building was completed in 1934 by architect Berthold Lubetkin and the Tecton Group, who combined modernist principles with advanced reinforced concrete techniques. Engineer Ove Arup played a crucial role in its construction, establishing a landmark in early zoo architecture innovation.
The structure was designed to bring animals and visitors closer through innovative observation methods. Its distinctive shape and open layout represented a fresh thinking about how people could experience wildlife in urban settings.
The pool is now empty and best viewed from the surrounding grounds, where its architectural form becomes apparent from different vantage points. The structure sits within zoo grounds and is easily accessible as you walk through the park.
The structure served as a filming location for Harry Styles' music video 'As It Was', bringing it renewed attention despite its original purpose having ended. This second life as a cultural backdrop shows how architectural spaces can gain new meaning beyond their original design.
