Clearbury Ring, Archaeological site near Downton, England
Clearbury Ring is a hillforted settlement site located on elevated ground near Downton in southern England. A single earthen rampart encircles the interior space and is backed by a protective ditch that runs around the perimeter.
This hillfort was built during the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age as a defensive settlement for people living in the area. The structure shows how communities in this period organized their defenses and established permanent settlements on high ground.
This place served as a gathering and settlement area for early communities who lived and worked across the surrounding landscape. The artifacts found here show that people maintained a presence over many generations, making it a center of activity in this region.
The site is accessible to visitors who wish to walk the grounds and take in views across the surrounding landscape. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the terrain can be uneven and muddy, especially after rain.
The location offers far-reaching views across the Avon valley, suggesting it was chosen for its vantage point to observe the wider landscape. Traces of ancient field systems still visible on the ground reveal how people managed their farming areas to support the community.
