Tithe Barn, Sturry

The Tithe Barn in Sturry is a red brick structure dating to the early 16th century, featuring a tiled roof supported by ten substantial wooden posts. The building extends approximately 160 feet (49 meters) in length and now functions as part of The King's School Junior School campus on Church Lane.

The structure was built in the early 16th century to store agricultural goods for St Augustine's Abbey, a nearby monastery. Following the Dissolution of the monasteries, the building passed into private hands and eventually became part of an educational institution.

The barn now hosts performances and school events, serving as a cultural hub for the community. Visitors can observe how the historic structure functions as a gathering place for assemblies and artistic activities.

The building sits on an active school campus and is not open to the general public for regular visits. Contacting the school beforehand is advisable if you wish to view the exterior or inquire about occasional access opportunities.

The author Rudyard Kipling attended the opening ceremony in 1929 when the property transformed into an educational facility. This connection to a celebrated writer adds an unexpected literary dimension to the site's history.
