Collingwood Monument, Monument and statue in North Tyneside, England.
The Collingwood Monument is a tall stone column with a statue in Tynemouth, North Tyneside. Four old cannons sit along the steps at the base surrounding the structure.
A public collection raised the funds in 1845 to honor the officer who took command after Nelson fell at Trafalgar. Three years later, the cannons from his flagship were put in place.
The structure takes its name from a local admiral and shows him in naval uniform facing the river mouth. Residents use the surroundings for small commemorations and gather here on anniversaries tied to seafaring.
The structure sits near the river mouth at the end of Front Street and is visible from the road. You can walk up the steps and move around the column.
The four cannons truly came from the ship the admiral commanded at Trafalgar and were added three years after the column was unveiled. They are not replicas but real naval guns from the early 1800s.
