Bourne Mill, Historical watermill in Colchester, England

Bourne Mill is a stone watermill with a working waterwheel situated beside a millpond surrounded by wetlands and trees along Bourne Road in Essex. The building displays architectural features including gabled ends and chimneys that reflect different construction periods.

The building began as a fishing lodge in 1591 and was converted into a fulling mill for textile processing in 1640. It later operated as a corn mill until the 1930s when milling activities ceased.

This place served as a center for local craft work and daily labor for centuries. Visitors can observe today how water-powered machinery shaped the lives and economic activities of people in this region.

The ground floor is accessible for visitors, with reserved disabled parking spaces near the entrance. A small shop inside offers second-hand books and other items for visitors to browse.

The structure incorporates architectural elements salvaged from the former St John's Abbey, including characteristic Dutch-style gable ends. These reused materials demonstrate how older buildings were repurposed into new constructions.
