Church of St James and St Paul, Grade II* listed Anglican church in East Hill, Colchester, England.
The Church of St James and St Paul is a Gothic church dating from the 13th to 15th centuries with a prominent tower rising above East Hill in Colchester. Its interior features an ornate timber roof with a rood screen, a spacious chancel, and windows that flood light across the lower levels.
The building was constructed over several centuries between the 13th and 15th centuries, with later work expanding the original structure. A comprehensive interior restoration under architect Samuel Sanders Teulon in 1870-1871 renewed the timber work and stabilized the vaulting.
The parish follows traditional Catholic practices within the Church of England, which is visible in the formal liturgy and the way the interior is arranged. Visitors can experience this deep liturgical tradition directly during services.
The church is located in an active neighbourhood and is easy to reach on foot, with the tower visible from various approaches. Visitors should know that regular services take place, so it is wise to check ahead for times when the building is open for private visits.
The roof timbers display fine craftsmanship from different periods, with some original beams from the medieval era still visible. These layers of construction over the centuries tell the story of evolving building techniques and local craft traditions.
