33, Stonegate, Grade II* listed building in Stonegate, York, England

33 Stonegate is a three-story timber-framed building with a carved wooden devil bracket supporting its storefront, spanning multiple architectural periods. The structure preserves its original features while functioning as a retail space, retaining first-floor paneling and doors.

The building originates from the early 1600s and underwent substantial changes in the late 1600s, including a brick extension and new interior staircase. These alterations continue to define the structure's appearance and layout today.

The building serves as the flagship store of Abraham Moon, a traditional Yorkshire woollen mill that carries on the region's textile production legacy.

The building is centrally located in York and easily accessible on foot. Visitors should note that it functions as an active retail business, so the best opportunities to explore inside and outside fall during regular business hours.

Local tradition connects this building to writer Laurence Sterne, who reportedly lived here and frightened thieves by banging his walking stick against the bedroom walls at night. This tale remains part of York's folklore about the street's notable residents.
