St Leonard's Church, Heston, Medieval church in Heston, England
St Leonard's Church is a medieval church with a four-storey west tower featuring buttresses and tall windows throughout. The nave and aisles are covered with Welsh slate roofs that have protected the structure for generations.
The church originated in the 14th century and underwent major restoration between 1866 and 1867 under architect Thomas Bellamy. This renovation preserved the medieval structure while using original materials to maintain its character.
The interior features monuments crafted by Robert Adam for the Child family and stained glass created by renowned artist C E Kempe. These works reflect the church's importance to prominent local families over the centuries.
The church can be accessed from Heston Road in the London Borough of Hounslow and hosts regular services and community events. It is worth checking ahead to see if any special gatherings are planned that might affect visiting hours.
The churchyard contains the grave of Private Frederick John White, whose death from military flogging in 1846 prompted changes to how the armed forces handled punishment. His burial site marks a turning point in British military reform.
