Regal Cinema, Grade II* listed movie theater in Uxbridge, England.
Description
Regal Cinema is a movie theater featuring Egyptian Revival design with decorative ceramic tiles, a half-moon shaped stage opening, and tiered seating arranged for about 1,600 viewers. The interior retains original architectural elements from its construction period.
History
Built between 1930 and 1931 by architect E Norman Bailey, this entertainment venue operated as a cinema until 1977. Following that, it was converted into different nightclub spaces, repurposing its distinctive performance hall.
Culture
The Compton theatre organ, installed when the building opened, accompanied film screenings and created the soundtrack for entertainment in this space during its early years. The instrument shaped how audiences experienced performances here.
Practical
Located at 233 High Street in Uxbridge, the building preserves its original exterior features and is Grade II* listed. Access to interior spaces varies, so it is worth checking beforehand what areas are open to visitors.
Did you know?
The stadium-style seating placed the balcony at the rear without extending over the main floor, allowing unobstructed views from every seat. This design choice was notable for cinemas of that era.
