Burgie Castle, Tower house in Moray, Scotland.
Burgie Castle is a tower house in Moray that rises six stories and features a corbelled-out stair tower in one corner. The remaining north-western structure is the sole surviving section of a larger castle complex that was once built with multiple walls and defensive features.
The Dunbar family received the land from Kinloss Abbey in 1566 and built a Z-plan castle complex on the site. Much of the structure was torn down in the early 1800s when materials were taken for other uses.
The tower displays original architectural details that reflect the tastes and needs of the Scottish nobility who lived here centuries ago.
Access to the site is limited due to ongoing preservation work on the tower structure. Check current conditions before visiting, as maintenance may restrict entry at various times.
The tower still retains its original iron gate entrance and window bars, along with gun holes cut into the walls for defense. These working elements offer a rare glimpse into the practical defensive design of that era.
