Hazleton long barrows, north and south, Archaeological burial site in Gloucestershire, England

Hazleton long barrows are two ancient stone structures in Gloucestershire that consist of underground burial chambers with connecting passages and entrance areas. Both sites were originally built with stone to protect and define the graves.

These burial grounds date from the Stone Age and were built about 5,500 years ago. The northern site was excavated in the 1980s and revealed remains from several generations of one family.

These burial grounds show how communities in the Stone Age lived together and placed their dead in shared tomb chambers. The way the graves were built suggests that family and community bonds were very important to them.

The site sits in the countryside of Gloucestershire and needs careful planning to visit. It is wise to check local access rules ahead of time and bring proper footwear for uneven ground.

Scientists discovered through analyzing skeletal remains that over 30 people were buried at this site across many generations. This was among the first evidence proving family relationships inside a Stone Age grave in Britain.
