Duthil, Old Parish Church And Churchyard

Duthil, Old Parish Church And Churchyard, Medieval church and burial ground in Highland, Scotland

Duthil Old Parish Church is a stone structure with traditional Scottish religious architecture, rebuilt in its current form around 1826. The interior contains galleries along three walls and a raised pulpit positioned on the south side, while the surrounding burial ground holds numerous gravestones and family monuments.

The church was originally founded around 1400 as a dedication to Saint Peter and replaced an earlier pre-Reformation chapel. It underwent several reconstructions over time, with its current appearance dating to 1826 following the removal of an older structure.

The burial ground reflects the religious life of the local community across centuries, with gravestones marking the resting places of families who shaped the area's identity. The memorials show how generations were connected to this land and to each other.

Access to the church and burial ground is often available, though the building sits on private land and visitors should be respectful of the setting. The area offers little in terms of amenities, so it is best to bring refreshments from elsewhere or seek them out in nearby larger settlements.

The Seafield Mausoleum was built between 1837 and 1839 and has been sealed since 1911 after its final burial took place. This closure followed the wishes of Lady Caroline Stuart, making it a rare example of a completely locked family tomb in the area.
