Statue of Robert Clive, Bronze statue at King Charles Street in Whitehall, London, United Kingdom
The Statue of Robert Clive stands on a tall plinth at King Charles Street in Whitehall, presenting the figure of the British military officer. The plinth is decorated with three bronze reliefs depicting major events from Clive's career in India.
Sir William Forwood initiated this memorial in 1907 after writing to The Times that London lacked a monument to Clive. The work was relocated in 1916 from its original site outside Gwydyr House to its present location.
The bronze reliefs at the base show key moments from Clive's time in India, reflecting his role in British expansion. They tell of conflicts and treaties that shaped British-Indian relations.
The plinth displays inscriptions on its west face with Clive's name and birth and death years. The statue is located in an easily accessible spot where visitors can view the reliefs and inscriptions from different angles.
The statue was moved in 1916 to its current location after initially standing outside Gwydyr House. This relocation reflected changes in Whitehall's urban planning.
