Richmond House, Government building in Whitehall, City of Westminster, England
Richmond House is a government building at the southern end of Whitehall in Westminster. The structure combines modern architecture with traditional elements and incorporates Richmond Terrace into its overall design.
The current building was completed in 1987 and stands on the site of a former townhouse that belonged to the Duke of Richmond during the 1660s. This modern structure replaced the historic residence after the passage of centuries.
The Grade II* listed structure represents significant architectural value, designed by William Whitfield with careful attention to natural light and workspace efficiency.
The building is not usually open to visitors as it functions as an administrative centre. The best view is from the street, where the facade and architectural details are clearly visible.
The building served temporarily as a chamber for the House of Commons during extensive renovation works at the Palace of Westminster. This temporary use was a practical solution to enable parliamentary operations while restoration work took place.
