New Scotland Yard, Police headquarters in Westminster, London, United Kingdom
Description
The Curtis Green Building is a police headquarters on Victoria Embankment in Westminster, London, and has housed New Scotland Yard since 2016. Its stone facade rises several stories and culminates in a clock tower that stands out clearly against the skyline.
History
William Curtis Green originally designed the structure as an office extension for the neighboring Norman Shaw Buildings and completed it in 1940. Decades later, after selling the old headquarters sites, the Metropolitan Police moved back into this riverside building in 2016.
Culture
The entrance displays the familiar three-shield Metropolitan Police emblem, designed in the 1820s and clearly visible to passersby today. Inside, several thousand staff work daily on London's safety, making the place feel like the nerve center of public order for many Britons.
Practical
You can reach the site via Westminster Underground Station and view the facade easily from the Thames riverside footpath. The building itself is not open to the public, but a short walk along Victoria Embankment rewards you with a clear look at the architecture.
Did you know?
The rotating sign from the previous Scotland Yard headquarters on Broadway was moved here to preserve the connection to the agency's long tradition. It now spins outside the new entrance, reminding passersby of the police command's moves through London's history.
