Westminster Millennium Pier, a pier on the River Thames, in the City of Westminster
Westminster Millennium Pier is a passenger ship terminal on the River Thames in central London, located beside Westminster Bridge near the Houses of Parliament. The pier accommodates multiple boat services that depart regularly throughout the day to destinations including Greenwich and Tower Bridge.
A floating pier once occupied this site in the 1950s and was used for a royal water trip by Queen Elizabeth II in 1954. The structure sank in 1955 after developing a leak, an event witnessed by observers but with no casualties reported.
The pier takes its name from Westminster Abbey, the historic church that overlooks it. Visitors gather here to start their exploration of central London, creating a meeting point where locals, commuters, and tourists from around the world converge on the riverbank.
The pier is easily reached from Westminster Underground Station and has wheelchair ramps and sheltered waiting areas for visitors. Ticket machines and a staffed office are located at the entrance where staff can help plan your trip or answer questions about boat schedules.
The sinking of the original floating pier in 1955 was such a remarkable event that it was even mentioned on the British comedy show The Goon Show. This curious episode of London history remains largely unknown to visitors today.
