Mar Hall, hotel in Renfrewshire, Scotland, UK
Mar Hall is a Gothic-style mansion in Renfrewshire, Scotland, overlooking the River Clyde and an adjacent golf course. The estate is made up of several wings with guest rooms, a grand hall with high ceilings, a spa, and woodland gardens.
The mansion was built in 1828 by architect Sir Robert Smirke for Lord Blantyre as a Gothic revival residence. After serving as a military hospital during World War One, it fell into disrepair and was restored and reopened as a hotel in 2004.
The name Mar Hall traces back to the Mar family, who shaped the estate over generations. Inside, local artwork and Scottish decorative details are visible throughout the rooms, giving the building a clear regional character.
The hotel sits close to Glasgow and is easily reached by road, with parking available on the estate grounds. Wheelchair-accessible rooms are offered, and the gardens and golf course can be explored at your own pace.
Sir Robert Smirke, the architect behind Mar Hall, is best known for designing the British Museum in London. Finding his work in the Scottish countryside, far from his most recognised city projects, is something many visitors do not expect.
