Maiden Way, Roman road in Cumbria and Northumberland, England.
The Maiden Way extends for 20 miles between Kirkby Thore and Carvoran, crossing the Pennines at an elevation of 2200 feet through steep gradients.
During Roman occupation, this road connected military forts at Bravoniacum and Magnis, with an intermediate fort at Epiacum facilitating the movement of troops and supplies.
The name Maiden Way first appeared in twelfth-century records as Maydengathe, potentially derived from the Maiden Castle located on the Stainmore road.
Modern visitors can explore sections of the original Roman engineering by following the Pennine Way footpath, which incorporates parts of this ancient route.
Recent LIDAR technology investigations revealed that the road actually extends southward from Kirkby Thore to Low Borrowbridge near Tebay, expanding its known length.
