The 37-hectare wetland contains two distinct water bodies, Great Hardmead Lake and Hollycross Lake, surrounded by diverse plant communities and wildlife habitats.
The site transformed from a former gravel extraction pit into a protected nature reserve, receiving Site of Special Scientific Interest designation in 1999.
The reserve functions as an educational center where researchers conduct field studies to monitor local biodiversity and ecological patterns throughout the seasons.
Visitors can access the reserve from Amwell Lane or along the River Lee Navigation towpath, with designated observation points in multiple bird hides.
The reserve houses twenty-five percent of all British mollusc species and ranks as the most substantial dragonfly habitat in Britain.
