Amwell Quarry, Nature reserve in Great Amwell, United Kingdom.
Amwell Quarry is a nature reserve with two lakes, Great Hardmead Lake and Hollycross Lake, surrounded by different plant communities. The waters and their shores provide various habitats for wildlife.
The site began as a gravel pit that was transformed into a protected area. In 1999, it received designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The place draws nature enthusiasts who come to watch birds and explore the two lakes and their surroundings. Visitors experience the changing seasons and the variety of plants and creatures that share this landscape.
You can enter from Amwell Lane or along the River Lee Navigation towpath. Several bird hides are placed at different spots so you can watch wildlife from sheltered viewing points.
The site hosts more dragonfly species than anywhere else in Britain. It also contains about one-quarter of all British mollusc species, making it scientifically important.
