Castell Caer Seion

Castell Caer Seion, Iron Age hillfort on Conwy Mountain, Wales

Castell Caer Seion is a hillfort settlement on Conwy Mountain in Wales, surrounded by defensive walls and featuring multiple access points across the hilltop. The remains of circular dwellings scattered throughout the site show how people lived and worked on this elevated location.

The fort developed during the Iron Age and remained occupied across several centuries, with evidence of activity from the 6th to 2nd century BC. Archaeological work revealed two distinct fortified areas, suggesting the site was built and rebuilt to meet changing needs over time.

The settlement's name reflects its ancient fortified nature and reveals how Iron Age communities organized their living spaces on this hilltop. The arrangement of walls and entrances shows how residents built their society around defense and shared spaces.

Visitors approach the site via footpaths beginning at a parking area located at the mountain's base and climbing upward to the hilltop. The terrain can become slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear and allowing extra time for the walk uphill are helpful considerations.

The inner fort had no direct ground-level connection to the main fortified area, suggesting residents used ladders or elevated structures to move between sections. This design choice would have provided an extra layer of control and defense during the Iron Age.
