Chalkney Wood

Chalkney Wood is a protected woodland in Essex covering about 73 hectares with a diverse mix of tree species. The forest floor hosts brambles, primroses, and wood anemones, while approximately twenty ponds are scattered throughout the site.

The woodland was established in the early 12th century and gifted to Colne Priory, giving it roots in medieval times. It has remained continuously managed since then, evolving across multiple centuries.

The woodland has been managed using time-honored practices for centuries, shaping how the forest looks and functions today. You can observe how these traditional methods create the layered structure of trees and plants that define the place.

The woodland is open to visitors year-round with footpaths throughout for exploring different areas. The main entrance is accessed from Swansomb Road, and the site is easily reached from Tey Road off the A1124.

The woodland sits on acid silts and sands, creating distinct ecological zones within the same forest. This geological variation shapes which plants and wildlife thrive in different parts of the site.
