Chalkney Wood, Protected woodland in Essex, England

The 73-hectare forest contains numerous tree species including ash, lime birch, and pedunculated oak, with a ground layer of bramble, primrose, and wood anemone.

The woodland dates back to the early twelfth century when it was donated to Colne Priory by Aubrey de Vere I or his son.

The woodland management technique of coppicing has been continuously practiced in Chalkney Wood for over four centuries, maintaining traditional forestry methods.

The forest provides year-round public access through footpaths, with an entry point from Swansomb Road and directions via Tey Road from the A1124.

Twenty ponds are scattered throughout the woodland, which spans across acid silts and sands, creating distinct ecological conditions.
