Chappel Viaduct, Railway viaduct in Essex, England

The Chappel Viaduct stretches 1,066 feet across the Colne Valley, featuring 32 brick arches that reach a maximum height of 75 feet.

Engineer Peter Bruff directed the construction of this Victorian railway structure between 1847 and 1849, using seven million locally sourced bricks.

The viaduct represents a milestone in British railway engineering, demonstrating the Victorian era preference for solid brick construction over timber alternatives.

The structure carries trains on the Gainsborough Line connecting Marks Tey station in Essex to Sudbury in Suffolk, with regular service throughout the day.

This Grade II listed structure stands as the second largest brick construction in England, following only Battersea Power Station in scale.
